DENBIGH high street is set for a floral makeover as volunteers will be getting stuck into planting tomorrow morning, ready to be judged by the Wales in Bloom competition.

The ‘High Street Plant Up’, organised by Denbigh in Bloom, a gardening volunteer group, will see last year’s flowers removed and new flowers put in the high street’s 22 railing baskets.

The high street display will be judged by panellists from the Wales in Bloom competition, a nationwide gardening competition organised by the Royal Horticultural Society to encourage community groups to brighten up their town or city through floral displays.

Helena Cawthray, secretary for Denbigh in Bloom, said: “The bulbs that we had planted in the railing baskets and raised planters in October last year need replacing.

“This is the first time Wales in Bloom will be judging our work and we want the high street to look amazing for when they come.

“We have been encouraging businesses with frontage on the high street to get involved to impress the judges

“The planting session is open to everybody to get involved in taking out the old bulbs and putting new ones in, as well as placing the railings and watering the plants.”

Last year’s plants include salvia, fuchsias, trailing petunias, nasturtiums and begonias, with the arrangement for this year yet to be revealed.

Ms Cawthray said: “The flower arrangements have been designed by Graham Pickles, owner of Green Fingers, and were very popular last year.

“People were amazed by last year’s display, particularly the purple salvias, which people were interested in buying for themselves from Green Fingers.

“It is great that the plant up can encourage people to create their own displays, buying their plants from an independent garden centre based in Denbigh.”

The Wales in Bloom panellists will judge the high street display on their visit to Denbigh on June 10.
