PLASTIC pollution has resurfaced as a dog-walker found an amass of litter in the River Clwyd between Ruthin and Rhewl last week.

The plastic, including bottles and milk cartons, was found collected around a fallen tree in a section of the River Clwyd between Ruthin and Rhewl.

The river is known for its abundance of sea trout and is also home to otters.

Vicki Bellis, from Ruthin, who was taking her dog for a daily walk when she came across the litter, said: “It’s a shame to see. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen litter in the river.

“I have no idea who the litter belongs to but it is either getting blown in or thrown in.

“I hope to see a change in people’s attitudes and think about using the bins that are provided.”

This comes following David Attenborough’s landmark ‘Blue Planet II’ series that addressed issues related to the pollution of oceans.

Anne Roberts, town councillor for Ruthin, said: “It is concerning but Denbighshire is fighting an uphill battle with little resources to improve the situation.

“Education has been tried but does not seem to be working.”

Ruthin Town Council is hoping to set up a Tidy Town initiative that will hold monthly meetings to tackle litter-related issues.

Cllr Roberts said: “The initiative will be led by Cllr Gavin Harris, deputy mayor of Ruthin, in conjunction with the annual litter pick and will allow us to face the problem more regularly, which we hope will make a noticeable difference.”
