THIS week, the 70th anniversary of the NHS is to be celebrated on national television – with a little bit of help – at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.

The Big NHS Singalong Live, a one-off ITV event, will attempt to set world-record for the biggest live singalong with a landmark performance of the classic Beatles song ‘With a Little Help from My Friends’ on Wednesday, July 4.

The singalong will happen as part of the Eisteddfod’s international showcase event, ‘The Classical Collection’ concert at Llangollen Pavilion this evening, which will include three finalists of the Pendine International Voice of the Future competition, a Wrexham-based choir Cantorion Sirenian Singers, and a collaboration between renowned pianists Vicky Yannoula and Peter Jablonski.

The singalong will form a part of the 60-minute special ITV programme, presented by Ashley Banjo and Sara Cox, who will hear exceptional stories from staff and patients across the NHS, alongside the centrepiece singalong by the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir, who will be joined by popstars at Abbey Road Studios where the Beatles originally recorded their song.

The NHS cover of the classic will be recorded and produced by Jon Cohen and Timbaland, and will be released as a single to raise money for NHS Charities Together, a group of more than 100 NHS charities that have come together to for the 70th anniversary of the NHS and raise awareness of the work that NHS charities do to support the NHS.

A spokesperson for Llangollen Eisteddfod said: “We are delighted to be taking part in a national live singalong to celebrate the NHS’s 70th birthday.

“We would love as many NHS workers as possible to wear uniforms, or if you don't have a uniform it would be great if you could wear bright clothing.”

Priya Singh, ITV commissioning editor for factual entertainment, said: “We want to show the dedicated people who make us love the NHS just how much we appreciate them with a big, celebratory event for their 70th birthday. It promises to be a unique, uplifting show packed with plenty of surprises.”

Ms Cox said: “It is so exciting to be part of this challenge to break a world record and celebrate the amazing work of the NHS. We’ll be travelling the length and breadth of the UK recruiting people to join in to make sure we smash that record and show everyone working in our NHS how much we appreciate them.”
