A CELEBRATED physician has been awarded a prestigious by Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod on the 70th birthday of the NHS.

Dr Olwen Williams, a consultant physician in genitourinary/HIV medicine was honoured as Day President at the Llangollen Eisteddfod on Thursday, July 5.

Dr Williams, who has received an OBE for her services to medicine in Wales in 2005 and was named Welsh Woman of the Year in 2000, delivered a speech in honour of the tireless work of NHS staff on the service's milestone anniversary.

Speaking after her address on the Royal International Pavilion stage, Dr Williams said: β€œIt’s been an absolutely fantastic experience at the International Eisteddfod today and I felt it was so appropriate to ask the audience to show their appreciation for our National Health Service.

"It was also a wonderful opportunity for me to talk about my area of expertise and the impact that HIV has had globally.”

Dr Williams' award is part of a series of celebrations of the NHS in Llangollen Eisteddfod, which included the NHS Big Singalong led by Love Island star Amber Davies, from Denbigh, and Colleen Nolan.
