PUPILS and staff past and present of a 100-year-old school are invited on a trip down memory lane before its closure this summer.

Ysgol Rhewl, near Ruthin will celebrate its 100th anniversary ahead of its permanent closure at the end of the summer term.

The school has a jam-packed day of events tomorrow (Friday, July 13), during which pupils and staff past and present, parents and the wider community will have the chance to learn about the school's history and its role in the Rhewl community.

A variety of exhibitions will be on display, divided into tri-decades of 30-35 years since it was established in 1918. These will include photographs, class photos, registration log-books, plus the school's first log-book.

There will be song performances from current pupils, which will include hints of stories told by former pupils that have attended meet-up sessions held by the school over recent months in the lead up to the big day.

Attendees can also expect a range of 'pick and mix' sweets from across the decades, such as 'sweet tobacco', fudge, Fizz Wizz, aniseed balls and flying saucers.

Former pupils believed to be attending are two World War II evacuees, whom current pupils will have the chance to meet.

Ellen Jones, headteacher at Ysgol Rhewl, said: "We are really excited to give our past and present pupils the opportunity to come together to mark the final chapter of the school's history."

The event takes place between 2pm and 6pm on Friday, July 13 at Ysgol Rhewl, Clwyd Street, Ruthin, LL15 2TU.
