STARS from the West End have descended to the stage in Denbigh to raise thousands of pounds to enable young people of all economic backgrounds to take part in a creative workshop.

Performers from West End musicals such as Mamma Mia, Blood Brothers and Phantom of the Opera joined some of Denbigh’s own for a performance to raise over £3,000 for Denbigh Workshop, a charity that holds arts and performance workshops for young people.

The event was held at Denbigh Town Hall on Saturday, July 8, organised by Tracy Spencer-Jones, founder of Denbigh Workshop.

Nearly 200 people attended the once-in-a-townlife opportunity to see the star-studded performance, which included Danny Taylor (Blood Brothers) play guitar with his own take on ‘Wanna Be Like You’ from the Jungle Book, while Linzi Matthews (Blood Brothers and Dr Seuss the Musical) delivered a beautiful and powerful version of ‘Wizard and I’ from Wicked.

Another Blood Brother’s veteran, Sean Jones, living in Denbigh, brought his unique twist on ‘Mr Cellophane’ from Chicago, and ripped off his tuxedo.

Denbigh Workshop’s students also took to the stage with a performance of ‘When I Grow Up’ from Matilda the Musical and ‘Million Dreams’ from the Greatest Showman, supported by the Denbigh Community Choir.

The evening finished without a dry eye in the house following a touching rendition of the Blood Brothers’ classic ‘Tell Me It’s Not True’ led by the talented Tracy Spencer-Jones.

A total of £2,015 was raised on the night through ticket sales, a raffle, tombola and programmes.

After the event, Ms Spencer-Jones said: “It is amazing that the event was so well supported by the community.

“I’m proud of our little town coming together to do something for the young people who live here.

“It means no child will go hungry for the five days and it will pay for four tutors and four support workers.”

An additional £1,000 has been secured from Barclays as part of the bank’s Employee Match funding scheme, through which it contributes to employees’ fundraising efforts.

The funds raised will contribute to resources, including food, tutors and support workers, for the workshop’s summer school, which aims to enable the participation of young people from all backgrounds, regardless of economic status.

Any young people aged 7-16 who are interested in Drama and would like to take part in the Denbigh Workshop at the HWB Dinbych between August 13-17 should contact thedenbighworkshop@gmail.com
