SCHOOL meal prices in Denbighshire will increase from September.

Denbighshire County Council have revealed its plans to increase the cost of school meals from £2.10 to £2.20 in primary schools and from £2.25 to £2.35 in secondary schools.

The change will come into force from September 4 2018.

Between September and December - children are in school for an average of 72 days. For those opting to have school meals daily, it will mean an extra £7.20.

Over the course of the school year, children spend an average of 209 days in school. This means an increase - from when term starts in September until the Summer holidays - of £20.90 for those who have school meals every day.

Denbighshire Council said that: "Unfortunately, due to the increasing cost of producing a school meal, prices will be increasing from September 4.

"Denbighshire school meals are still amongst the most competitively priced in Wales."

When approached by the Journal, the local authority said it was unable to comment further.

Free school meal allowance will rise accordingly.
