THE exhibition to celebrate the life and career of the late motor racing star Tom Pryce, the only Welshman to win a Formula 1 race, is now open to the public.

The launch event at Denbigh Museum was attended by the chairman of Denbighshire County Council, Cllr Peter Scott, and the Mayor of Denbigh, Cllr Catherine Jones.

Tom’s friends including Dave Jones and Trefor Williams were joined by Ronwy Rodgers, who had promised the F1 racer’s father that Denbigh would celebrate Tom’s legacy.

Although from Ruthin, Tom attended Ysgol Frongoch in Denbigh and spent much of his childhood in the town.

He went on to win the non-championship Formula One Brands Hatch Race of Champions in 1975, the only Welshman to win an F1 race.

But two years later tragedy struck when Tom and a race marshal were killed in a collision at the South African Grand Prix.

His journey ended too soon, however. During a race at the South African Grand Prix in 1977, Tom’s car collided with a teenage race marshal and he was struck on the head with a fire extinguisher. Both men died upon impact.

The exhibition at Denbigh Museum provides an extensive tribute to Tom, his history, and that which he created.

The display runs from 2pm to 4pm each Monday and Thursday until October 1. Visits at other times can be arranged on 07792315723 or at gwyneth.kensler@denbighshire.gov.uk
