A VOLUNTEER task force has been set up to tackle a town's minor cleaning issues that otherwise go undone.

Ruthin Tidy Town Team (RTTT), a group of volunteers organised by Ruthin Town Council, will work on various projects geared towards improving the townscape and amenity spaces within Ruthin.

The aim of the group is not only to take on general litter-picking and maintenance work but to make visible and defined improvements to the town.

The group has been established following Ruthin's 'Future Week', a series of public collaborative events held in April to encourage input from professionals, businesses, organisations and the wider community, which has allowed the town council to establish priority projects to improve the area. A volunteer group to carry out small improvements to make Ruthin a more attractive place to live emerged as a popular want.

From the drawing board to the street, the RTTT will receive substantial backing from the council with £10,000 funding that it is hoped will establish a sustainable fund with the help of business sponsors and community donations.

Gavin Harris, deputy mayor and chair of Ruthin Town Council’s Amenities committee, said: “Ruthin Tidy Town Team has been established to help bring about the ‘small change, big difference’ approach to the town environment.

“This will ensure the town looks its best and brings the community and those passionate about Ruthin together in a way where they can make a tangible difference.

“The aim is to create community participation that is productive, sociable, enjoyable and rewarding”.

Mr Harris added: “Whether you are employed or retired, a skilled gardener, enjoy cleaning, are handy with a paintbrush, or just enjoy doing your bit for the community, volunteers need no particular skills other than a willingness to join in.

“The project is as much about townscape improvement, community engagement and encouraging a sense of pride in the environment as it is about a fun way to get involved and socialise with different people.”

Volunteers are requested to commit to joining in at least 6 times a year.
