JAZZ is heading to the Dee Valley.

While the Berwyn Arms, in Glydyfrdwy, hosts rock nights on a regular basis, the hotel has started to broaden its musical style by holding a monthly jazz session.

It's not simply as a performance by a specific band.

Instead, it takes the form of a jam session where a rhythm section provides the backing for guest players who are invited to play tunes of their choice, either individually or together with other ‘sitters-in’.

There would typically be a mixture of instruments with even a vocalist.

This offers the listener a variety of musical styles and tunes which is very popular.

The Berwyn sessions feature tunes from the mainstream era of the 1950s through to the modern jazz days, ending in the late 60s. Artists of mainstream would be typically Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins and Count Basey, and the modern stars could be such as Charlie Parker and Miles Davis.

The sessions are organised by Louis Noble, from Wrexham, and Danny Fishel, of Corwen.

Both are experienced musicians who have a lot of experience of running this type of session.

Held normally on the last Wednesday in the month at 8.30pm, they can vary, so people are asked to check with the hotel or on www.facebook.com/deevalleyjam/

The next session is scheduled for August 29.

Louis and Danny can be contacted through Facebook if anyone has any questions.
