AN APPEAL for witnesses has been launched after vandals blighted a First World War memorial flower display.

North Wales Police believe the incident took place in the early hours of the morning on Wednesday, August 8 in which three people kicked a granite flower planter from a ledge at the foot of the Llangollen war memorial, leaving the planter, flowers, faux poppies and soil scattered across the floor.

The memorial is dedicated to the soldiers of Llangollen and Llantysilio parishes who died during the First World War, such as privates, riflemen, lance corporals and a flight lieutenant.

Those listed also include troops from Pentredwr, Rhewl and Llandynan.

CCTV footage belonging to Llangollen town council has captured the incident, which has been passed onto police.

A spokesperson for Llangollen town council said: “Two ladies and a gentleman have been viewed causing the damage to the planters on the First World War memorial and have been recorded on the town council's CCTV system. We will be passing the footage to the police for their examination.

“If we have sufficient evidence the town council will be looking to take action against the individuals.”

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: “An incident of criminal damage at the Llangollen war memorial was reported to us on Wednesday, August 8.

“Granite planters were kicked over with flowers and soil scattered across the floor.

“It is believed to have taken place in the early hours of the morning.

“No permanent damage was caused.

“Llangollen council has handed CCTV footage of the incident to the police and an investigation will take place.

“Anyone with information should contact the police using reference W11854.”
