Myddelton College

A REAL first has been celebrated at a Vale of Clwyd educational establishment.

Students at Myddelton College, in Denbigh, have been celebrating the success of their first ever graduates with results coming in well above the Welsh national average.

This year marks the very first batch of exam results for the college, a non-academically selective school which opened its doors to local and international students in September 2016.

Among the subjects securing a 100 per cent pass rate (A*-C) were English literature, history, geography, further mathematics, chemistry and economics. 

“I am thrilled that after two years of hard work and dedication by students, parents and staff that we have produced our very first graduates who are heading off to make their impact on the world," said head teacher Mark Roberts.

"They not only leave us with excellent grades, but also with the attributes and characteristics that they need in order to thrive in the 21st century.” 

Celebrating some of the highest grades were twins George and Lucinda Charlesworth-Powell.

Lucinda will now read law at Newcastle University, while George will study economics at Northumbria University.

Outstanding international student Jin Hong passed four A levels, including an A* in maths and an A in chemistry, and is going on to study mathematics at Warwick University.

Lin Shangzhe was celebrating three straight A grades and has been accepted to read mathematics with finance at The University of Leeds, while Zhou Changcheng achieved an A and two B grades and goes on to read mathematics at the University College London.

Current Year 12 student and newly appointed head girl Keeley Ruane was celebrating three As and a B in her AS results and is delighted to be progressing into Year 13.

Ruthin School

ANOTHER successful year of A level and AS level results has been achieved at Ruthin School.

A high proportion of students have gained entry to Oxbridge and other top ranking universities.

Seven students will study at Oxford and Cambridge, while a total of 32 students achieved three or more A*/A grades.

George Mitenkov (5A*s and 1A) will study mathematics and computer science at Imperial College, while Selina Xing (5A*s), Hank Luo (4A*s) and Brian Li (3A*s and 2As) will study engineering at Cambridge.

Connie Zhao (5A*s) and Violet Liu (4A*s and 1A) will head to Cambridge to study natural sciences, with Martina Zhuang (4A*s and 1A) is off to Imperial College to study mathematics with statistics.

Khaleed Adeduntan (3A*s, 1A), Christian Kirkham (3A*s, 1A) and Alex Jang (3A*s) will study at UCL, Durham and Imperial College respectively.

At AS level, the results were similarly impressive with a high number of Lower Sixth students gaining top grades.

A total of 42 students achieved A grades in all subjects.

Grwp Llandrillo Menai

LEARNERS at Grwp Llandrillo Menai’s campuses across North Wales have been celebrating today after receiving outstanding A level and AS level results.

This summer, learners took exams in 40 A level subjects across Coleg Llandrillo, Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor and Coleg Menai, with nearly three-quarters achieving A*-C grades.

The grwp's overall pass rate of 97.6 per cent is above the national Welsh average and has enabled many learners to progress to leading universities, higher apprenticeships or employment. 

Reflecting on the positive results, the grwp’s chief executive Dafydd Evans said: “This is fantastic news for our students and sets them up very well for a successful future whether in higher education or in the workplace.”

He added: “May I take this opportunity to congratulate everyone who received their results today.

"I wish you every success in the future and would like to thank you for being an important part of the community here at Grwp Llandrillo Menai.”

Ysgol y Berwyn

YSGOL y Berwyn students are preparing to travel far and wide on the back of excellent A level results.

Sixth form pupils from the Bala school have been celebrating today after picking up their A level grades.

Their higher education destinations include Aberystwyth, Cardiff, Bangor, Lancaster and Derby to study degree courses, while others have opted for post-18 apprenticeships in various locations.

Among the many success stories at the school is Osian Jones, who secured 2A*s, 2As and a B.

Llyr Ellis and Aron Llywelyn are both preparing to head to Cardiff University next month.

Llyr gained 2A*s and 2As, while Aron picked up 3As and a B.

Meanwhile, Luc Pryer Smith will study in Lancaster after gaining 2A*s and 2As.

Gwynedd Council has congratulated the county’s pupils on their A level results.

The council cabinet member for education Cllr Gareth Thomas said: “We can take pride in the success of our young people.

"The students are to be congratulated for their dedication and perseverance.

"I would also like to offer my sincere gratitude to the teachers for their hard work during the year and for preparing students so thoroughly for the examinations.

“I would like to wish all the very best to our young people as they make their choices for the next steps in their careers.”

Garem Jackson, head of education for Gwynedd Council, stated that he was very pleased with the A level results of students in the county's secondary schools.

He said: “I am very pleased with the results in Gwynedd schools again this year.

"The students and their teachers are to be congratulated warmly on their success.

“The percentage achieving grades A*-E across all subjects was very good again this year.

"The percentage achieving a grade A or better is 22.8 per cemt, and the percentage gaining A*-E grades is 100 per cent across the majority of subjects.

"This is pleasing and reflects the support and guidance provided for our young people.

“I would like to thank the schools and the teachers for their hard work and professionalism, the students for their efforts and the parents for their support.”

Ysgol Brynhyfryd

MORE than a third of all A level grades at Ysgol Brynhyfryd have been at A* or A.

Students at the Ruthin-based school have had good reason to be pleased, as 100 per cent have passed their A levels.

Meanwhile, a staggering 35 per cent of all grades awarded came at A* and A, with 65 per cent of grades at A*-B.

Headteacher Geraint Parry said “At last, the long wait and the sleepless nights are over and our students can now look forward to the next exciting chapter in their life.

"They have worked incredibly hard and these tremendous results are so very well deserved.

"Special thanks must go to the staff and parents of Brynhyfryd, who have tirelessly given their time and support over the past two years."

Notable successes at Ysgol Brynhyfryd include Matthew Reay, who achieved four A* grades, Catrin Roulston (3A*s and 1A) and head girl Sian Baldry (2A*s and 2As).

There was also joy for Emily Harrison and Eve Nelson (1A* and 3As); Megan Evans, Gwydion Davies, William Fellows and Phoebe Hughes (4As); Elwy Lloyd (1A*, 2As and 1B) and Gethin Williams (3As and 1B).

Phoebe Hughes will now head to the University of Manchester to study dentistry and she said: “I still feel nervous, it doesn’t feel real.

"I’m very excited and it couldn’t have turned out better!

"All the staff at Ysgol Brynhyfryd are so supportive and you know that there is more than one member of staff ready to answer any questions or organise help for you when you need it.”

Gwydion Davies is off to the University of Liverpool to study veterinary medicine.

He said: “I didn’t expect this!

"I was worried all night and today I’m blown away!

"I’d like to thank the teachers at Ysgol Brynhyfryd for being so helpful and taking the time to help us to prepare for these exams – out of their own time too!"

Megan Evans, who achieved A grades in maths, biology, chemistry and the Welsh Baccalaureate, is “over the moon” that she can now go to Cardiff University to study medicine.

Sian Baldry is off to the University of Manchester to study medicine and she is grateful to the teachers and staff at Ysgol Brynhyfryd.

Mr Parry added: "As our students now take up their university places across the country, my message to them is explore, innovate and most importantly 'hold fast that which is good'."

St Brigid's School

HUGE pride has been expressed at the performace of St Brigid's School's A level students.

The Denbigh-based school is celebrating another year of excellent A level results.

Once again, 100 per cent of pupils achieved the Level three threshold (two A levels at A*-E).

In addition, 87 per cent of Year 13 pupils passed with A*-C grades and an outstanding 34 per cent of grades were A* and A.

Star performers this year include Emily Davies (2A*s and 1A), Bethany McCaulay (2A*s and 1A), Charlotte Watson (1A* and 2As) and Molly Smythe-Jones (3As).

In addition to the high A level grades achieved, a record number of Year 13 pupils also attained the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award, which they accepted at Buckingham Palace in May. 

Chair of governors Anthony Hannigan was understandably proud of the achievements of the students.

He said “We are very proud of our young people who have worked extremely hard and reaped the benefits of their endeavours.

"As always, a huge thank-you goes to our dedicated staff who have helped the students attain these fantastic results.”

This year saw many students gaining entry to their first choice and Russell group universities to study subjects such as veterinary medicine and law, as well as other academic or vocational subjects.

St Brigid's School headteacher Rona Jones said: “We are very proud of these results.

"Thank-you to our parents for their continued support.

"We wish all of our Year 13 pupils every success in the future.

"Well done also to our Year 12 pupils who also achieved high grades at AS.

"We look forward to welcoming them back in September.”

Ysgol Glan Clwyd

It's been a perfect day at Ysgol Glan Clwyd!

The St Asaph school has been celebrating excellent A level results again this year, which have improved on the high standards of previous years.

A magnificent 100 per cent of the school's students attained the Level 3 threshold performance measure of two A levels at A*-E grades.

Meanwhile, a fifth of all grades achieved were A* or A and 72 per cent were A*–C grades.

On top of this, 97 per cent of students achieved the advanced Welsh Baccalaureate.

Ysgol Glan Clwyd headteacher Bethan Cartwright said: "Students and staff deserve praise for their hard work and dedication over the last two years.

"The students should also be commended for their valuable contribution to extra-curricular activities and services to the community. 

"Almost all students have obtained the grades or points score required for them to enter the university of their choice - attaining or getting higher than their personal, and often challenging, targets.

"It is also interesting to note that a far greater number of pupils were given unconditional offers for a place in university or college this year."

The proud Ysgol Glan Clwyd headteacher added: "We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our students the very best as they take the next step in their careers, and thank their parents / guardians, who have given valuable support to their children and the school over the years."

Coleg Cambria

Coleg Cambria has further strengthened its place among the top colleges in the UK with a 99 per cent overall A level pass rate.

The institution, which includes Coleg Llyfasi among its colleges, is celebrating its best-ever results having today achieved an 82 per cent pass rate for grades A* to C across its sites in Deeside, Wrexham and Denbighshire. 

The top performing courses included biology, English literature and Welsh, and 29 subjects secured a perfect pass rate of 100 per cent. 

AS level students also raised the bar, with an overall 95 per cent of students passing courses such as further maths, which was the stand out programme.

Coleg Cambria chief executive David Jones paid tribute to the students and staff for the hard work which has seen the college break all previous records.

“After our success last year it’s amazing to see we have continued to improve and achieved the best results in the college’s history,” said Mr Jones.

"I’m not surprised because I know how hard the students work; the expertise and support of our staff combined with the major investment we have made in cutting-edge facilities has contributed greatly toward this landmark, but, ultimately, it is down to the students ability, drive and determination.

"I would like to thank them for the way they have represented Coleg Cambria and congratulate everyone who received their grades today.

"We wish them all the best for the future and will always be here if they need us."
