A WORKSHOP aiming to provide young people with access to the arts irrelevant of their background is celebrating a successful summer following a charity performance.

Denbigh Workshop, a summer performing arts school has given over 50 young people aged seven to 18 the opportunity to get involved in a creative environment during the summer holidays.

The workshop is run by Tracy Spencer, former West End actor living in Denbigh for three years and is based at the HWB Dinbych where it holds activities such as street art lessons, make-up sessions and song-writing workshops led by professional artists.

The workshop’s recent performance at Alexanders Live in Chester has helped raise money for Musicians against Cancer, a charity event organised by a friend of Ms Spencer.

Introduced by Linda Nolan, Loose Women presenter, seven students from the workshop under the name ‘The Cabaret of Chaos’ took to the stage alongside Ms Spencer for the performance, showing off the skills they have learnt over the summer.

Ms Spencer said: “We have had a fantastic summer school. Our aim was to get the young people to work as a team and create an ensemble which they certainly did.

“This year we created puppets, did physical theatre, dance, singing and this culminated in a 'sharing' for parents and guardians. I was thrilled that all students took part and had a great time.

“Parents kept telling us they were up early and ready to go every day. We were so lucky to have fantastic tutors all professional actors Sean Jones, Chris Parle, Carys Gwilym, and John Lloyd.”

Cllr Mark Young, who was in attendance for the Chester performance, said: “As a father and supporter I couldn’t have been prouder than seeing the group get on stage as the opening act to a packed venue and nail it with amazing performances. The youngsters are a true reflection of the quality of training at Denbigh workshop.

“People say the Welsh can sing – well these performers left no doubt to the Chester crowd. Their families and Denbigh should be very proud indeed.”

The Denbigh Workshop will be performing at the show Tree Plant Bee and Me on the first and last weekend of September in the Wild Worlds Festival at Chester Zoo.
