A HISTORIC church near Corwen will be open to the public for a month, starting September 1.

St Mary’s Church, a Grade I-listed building dating back to the thirteenth century in Derwen, will be holding a month of Open Doors, the Cadw scheme to offer residents and visitors the chance to explore heritage sites that are usually closed to the public.

The church is renowned for its rood screen – which separates the nave from the chancel at the fore of the church – with a richly carved foliage and tracery a testament to the skills of medieval Welsh carpenters.

The church has a loft and arched braced roof dated to the fifteenth or sixteenth century, while the font is dated 1665.

There are also two notable stained-glass windows, while a fifteenth century Preaching Cross stands in the churchyard.

The church will be open from 9am to 6pm until September 30.

A special annual service will also be held by Reverend Richard Carter at 11am on Sunday, September 16.
