A group which gives people a chance to develop their interests and skills has elected a new chair.

At an annual general meeting of U3A (The University of the Third Age), Rhian Clark was made chairperson of the Abergele group.

She takes over the reins from Jo Hughes, who will remain as speaker secretary and business secretary.

Mrs Clark, member of Abergele bowling club, said: "It is an honour and a privilege to lead such an important part of our community and my thanks go to all those who give of their time to organise the classes and also to those who attend.

"I joined U3A a year ago. I'd taken lessons for bridge on a cruise ship last August and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to see if there was anywhere locally that I could continue to play. I was delighted to find Abergele U3A.

"The team there made me feel so welcome which in a way influenced my decision to put my name forward to be chair.

"As far as my aspirations are concerned, I would like to ensure that the residents of Abergele are aware of the diversity of the opportunities that are available and the interaction it offers together with continued learning.

"Communication is key in my opinion. I would welcome any new ideas for any new classes that people would support. I would like to see Abergele U3A leading the way. It’s a great organisation."

U3A is a charity which particular appeals to retired or part time working people. There is no age limit, but generally members are aged 50 or over.

The current membership in Abergele is 276. Visit u3asites.org.uk/abergele
