HENLLAN Flower Show has once more proved to be a terrific success.

This year's show was opened by Mr and Mrs Stephen Williams, of Denbigh, with a good turn out and a high standard of entries at the Church Institute, Henllan.

A newspaper article was recently discovered in the Denbighshire Archives dated 1873, showing that Henllan Flower Show has been running for well over 100 years.

The show is one of the main social events in the village and district of Henllan.

It was set up to encourage perfecting skills in horticulture, handicrafts, cookery and woodwork, including stick making, art and photography.

Henllan Gardening Club was established then and Lynda Jones was the winner of this year’s trophy.

The winner of the best large garden and hanging basket was Gwyneth Wynne, with David and Diane Ballard being the winners of the best small garden.

Diane Ballard was also the winner of the conservation garden for the best butterfly and caterpillar friendly patch.

Further winners on the day included Gareth Roberts, for the best exhibit of dahlia collections and the most outstanding exhibit in all the flower and dahlia open and local sections.

Gareth was also awarded the National Dahlia Society Silver and Bronze medals for excellent dahlia exhibits.

Bryn Lloyd Roberts was given the best in show respectively for a bowl of mixed dahlias and a vase of dahlias in the local section.

Dilys Edwards was the winner of the local novice section.

The winner of the most outstanding exhibit in the floral art section was Haf Evans and Carole Owens was awarded the prize for the best novice display in the section.

Angelina Lawson was winner of the outstanding exhibit in the cookery section for her mixed grain loaf.

Elsewhere, Mike Cottle was winner in the woodwork section for his turned cup, while G M Jones won the best in show in the handicraft section for her cross-stitch sampler.

A high standard of entries were seen in the handwriting, art, computer design and 2D characters sections, which were displayed by children from Ysgol Henllan.

The staff ensured that children’s entries were completed during the first days of the new term.

Handwriting winners were: Years 1 and 2, Riley Hoyles; Years 3 and 4, Alys Williams; Years 5 and 6, Freya Evans.

Winners of the computer design: U-8s, Erin Salusbury; U-12s, Christabelle Williams; Years 1,2 and 3, Jacob Davies.
