A PLAYGROUND of hundreds of children can be a daunting place for those at school that struggle to socialise or face problems at home.

Ysgol Frongoch in Denbigh has opened an outdoor learning area for pupils dealing with such difficulties in the hope it will offer them a safe space to meet new friends, learn valuable life skills and improve their wellbeing.

The play area, which includes tables and benches, bean bags and floral decorations made by pupils, will be the setting for games and activities taking place during playtime every day.

Teaching assistant Gwen Salisbury, responsible for supporting pupils and providing activities in the outdoor area, said: “There are pupils that struggle at lunchtime to make friends on the playground.

“There are 200 children at the school so the yard can be scary.

“There are some children find it hard to socialise, some have issues at home that make it difficult and others want one-to-one time. We have seen about 12 pupils a day take part so far and many are returning.”

“The outdoor area will help with these pupils wellbeing and mental health by giving them the opportunity to build relationships and life skills.”

The school launched a fundraising appeal in May to ask businesses to donate to their heartfelt cause, which raised a total of £1,120 and received support from a number of businesses.

Pupils were responsible for creating the outdoor area’s colourful floral display through painting and arts and crafts.

The outdoor area will continue to host arts and crafts, as well as board and card games.

Ms Salisbury said: “The outdoor area will help with these pupils wellbeing and mental health by giving them the opportunity to build relationships and life skills.”
