VISITORS to Ruthin can benefit from reduced parking charges for another year.
A pilot scheme in the town was due to end in March, but it has been so successful it will now be extended.
"We feel it's vitally important to continue the lower parking tariffs to attract more residents and visitors to use the town centre for their shopping,” said a spokesman for the Member Area Group, made up of local councillors.
“Ruthin has a wealth of small shops that provide quality products and we must make every effort in this climate to support local businesses and be far more competitive in the market.”
Residents and visitors to Ruthin can benefit from continued reduced car parking charges until March 31 2014.
Last year every Member Area Group in Denbighshire was given a one-off fund of £50,000 by the county council to invest on projects that will benefit the local community.
Councillors who are members of the Ruthin Member Area Group decided to use a part of their allocation to subsidise parking in Ruthin town centre.
"Local businesses have continued to lobby for cheaper car parking charges and we feel we must do our bit to help regenerate the town,” the spokesman added.
“By extending these pilot charges for the next year, we hope that businesses will feel the benefit."
Ruthin town councillor Rosie Hughes-Moseley, who runs the Boar’s Head and works in Fineline, said business owners in the town would welcome the news.
“I think the reduced charges have helped,” she said.
“There’s a lot more people around town.
“Charges do have a big impact on people when they don’t have a lot of money.
“If they have to pay 50p to park when they just want a few things they’ll end up just going to Tesco because it’s free.”
She added that there were some people who felt parking in Ruthin town centre should be completely free.
Following discussions with Denbighshire County Council, the fees will continue to be:
Dog Lane, Cae Ddol, Park Road, Troed y Rhiw and Rhos Street:
- Retain 10p for half an hour
- 50p for up to 4 hours
