A TOWN councillor has written a song for Ruthin – and got more than 1,000 hits on YouTube in a couple of days.
The song, called simply Ruthin, was written by local singer and entertainer turned town-councillor Geraint Woolford.
It was uploaded to the internet video site, accompanied by a video of scenic shots of the town, at the end of last week, and got 1,000 hits in two days.
Cllr Woolford composed the song after being set the challenge by local county councillor Huw Hilditch Roberts.
Written to celebrate the town and promote tourism it name-checks local landmarks and attractions such as Ruthin Gaol, Nantclwyd y Dre and nearby Moel Famau.
“Surrounded by mountains in a valley so green, lies a town of such beauty it has to be seen, when you enter the town from north, south, east, or west, you’ll see all its splendour, it’s Wales at its best,” the song starts, followed by a rousing chorus of “It’s Ruthin, it’s Ruthin, it’s Ruthin in Wales, there’s no place quite like it, it could tell you some tales.
“It’s historic and its quaint with attractions galore, it’s Ruthin, it’s Ruthin, it’s the town I adore.”
The song and video is being shared by townspeople and friends of Cllr Woolford on Facebook and he hopes it will “go viral”.
Cllr Woolford, a housing enforcement officer at Wrexham, but Ruthin born and bred, said: "It took me about two hours to write the lyrics, another hour for the music, the longest part was putting the video together.
“I was amazed to have had 300 hits on YouTube in the first six hours, then even more amazed that there had been 630 hits by the next morning.
“There are almost 1,000 this morning,” he said on Sunday.

“I am currently writing Welsh lyrics for the song as well.
“If it helps to promote Ruthin, then I will be very happy,” he added.
