UPDATED: 79-year-old man dies after serious crash near Abergele

A PENSIONER has died following a serious car crash near Abergele.

North Wales Police confirmed that the driver, a 79-year-old man from the Abergele/Pensarn area, died in in the single road traffic collision which happened on the A548 between Betws yn Rhos and Abergele on Wednesday (June 25) at about 16:24pm.

The incident happened around half a mile from Abergele Hospital and involved one vehicle, a Citroen C3.

Fire and Ambulance services were informed and attended and a male was pronouced dead at the scene.

North Wales Police have stated that John Gittins, Coroner for North East Wales and Central, has been informed but formal identification of the man has not been carried out.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 4.28pm yesterday, Wednesday, June 25, to reports of a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the A548 between Betws yn Rhos and Abergele.

"A paramedic in a rapid response car, an ambulance officer and a Wales Air Ambulance attended.

"Sadly one man was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Jane Thomas, sergeant of the Roads Policing Unit based in Deeside, added: “Our inquiries are continuing and I appeal to anyone who was travelling along the A548 at around the time of the incident to please contact myself or colleagues."
