WITH almost 700 sheep and 50 cattle entered in one of the final shows of the season, Cerrigydrudion Show retained its place as one of the finest agricultural shows in the North Wales show calendar.

The show committee was justified in its decision to invest in 100 extra sheep hurdles this year, as extra pens were needed to accommodate all the exhibitors.

Ifor Jones, livestock secretary, said: “We are very fortunate at Cerrig that the locals turn out to support the show. We have brought 10 new young stewards into the livestock section this year, all coming through the Young Farmers, and they have been excellent.”

In a new competition for the show, the first Ram Lamb Interbreed competition was won by local exhibitors, Geraint Jones, Tai’n y Waen, with a home bred Charollais ram lamb, and Rhodri Jones, Disgarth Isaf, coming reserve with a Beulah ram lamb.

In an excellent day for the Charollais sheep breed, Ifan Huw Hughes of Pontllyfni, Caernarfon, took the Individual Interbreed Champion with an aged ewe, with a Welsh Mountain Ram from Tecwyn Jones taking reserve.

The Interbreed Group was taken by another local exhibitor, Arwel Jones, Parc, Llangwm, with a group of 3 Cheviots.

In the cattle Interbreed competition, Bryn Roberts, Pont Rhuffydd, Bodfari, took the Pairs Competition with a pair of dairy heifers, narrowly beating T C Edwards of Pen y Bryniau with a pair of commercial cattle.

Despite reduced entries in the cattle sections at many shows this season, Cerrig triumphed with almost 50 cattle entered, including an outstanding display of dairy cattle, Welsh Blacks, and Commercials in both open and local classes. The Young People’s cattle section was well supported, with Cai Edwards, Pen y Bryniau, Betws GG, going on to win the Individual Interbreed.

We'll have more pictures in the Free Press print edition on Wednesday, September 17.
