LABOUR retained their seat in the Vale of Clwyd constituency whilst the Conservatives held on to both their seats in Aberconwy and Clwyd West.

Plaid Cymru held on to their seats in Anglesey and Arfon and in Clwyd South, Labour retained their seat. 

VALE OF CLWYD

Ann Jones won the Vale of Clwyd seat with 9,560 votes, just 768 more than Conservative candidate Sam Rowlands. 

Ms Jones first took her seat in the Welsh assembly in 1999 - when devolution was first established. 

In the early hours of the morning she tweeted:

Paul Davies-Cooke, UK Independence Party (UKIP) secured 2975, Mair Rowlands , Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales, received 2098 votes and Gwyn Williams, Welsh Liberal Democrats, secured 758 votes. 

The turn-out was 43.1 per cent - a total of 24,255 votes were cast.

ABERCONWY

In the Aberconwy constituency, Conservative Janet Finch-Saunders was re-elected as AM. 

Ms Finch-Saunders, who was first elected AM for the constituency in the last Welsh Assembly elections in 2011, received 7646 (35 per cent of the overall poll) securing her win by a majority of 754 votes.

She said: "I am delighted to have been re-elected to serve my constituents here in Aberconwy and with an increased vote for the Welsh Conservatives.

“This is the first time that Aberconway has re-elected its Assembly member, highlighting how badly let down residents feel by Plaid Cymru and Labour.

"It has been a huge honour and a privilege to represent and work for my constituents of Aberconwy for the past five years, and I am delighted to be able to continue this hard work in the fifth Assembly term.

“I remain absolutely committed to securing lower council tax bills for local residents and it cannot be right that under Labour, bills have risen exponentially in recent years.

"Elsewhere in North Wales in Wrexham and Vale of Clwyd Welsh Conservatives have come close to winning these constituency seats for the first time, highlighting a clear frustration with Labour.”

The total votes received by each candidate for Aberconwy are as follows: Janet Elizabeth Finch-Saunders (Welsh Conservative Party) 7646, Petra Mary Haig (Wales Green Party) 680, Sarah Ivonne Lesiter-Burgess (Welsh Liberal Democrats) 781, Trystan Lewis (Plaid Cymru: For North Wales) 6892, Mike Priestley (Welsh Labour) 6039.

A total 22,232 votes were cast in Aberconwy - a turnout of 49 per cent.

CLWYD WEST

In the Clwyd West constituency, conservative candidate Darren Millar was re-elected as AM.

Mr Millar, who has served as AM for the Constituency since 2007, this year received 10,831 votes (41 per cent of the overall poll) securing his win by a majority of 5063 votes.

Mr Millar said: “Having represented the people of Clwyd West since 2007, it is a huge honour to again be returned to the Assembly to fight the corner for this fantastic part of the world.

“I am looking forward to rolling up my sleeves again and being a strong voice for my constituents in the Assembly chamber.

“I am very grateful to each and every one of my supporters.”

The total votes received by each candidate for Clwyd West are as follows: Darren Millar (Welsh Conservative Party) 10831, Julian Huw Mahy (Wales Green Party) 565, Jo Thomas (Welsh Labour) 5246, David John Edwards (UK Independence Party) 2985,  Llyr Huws Gruffydd (Plaid Cymru: For North Wales) 5768, Victor Babu (Liberal Democrats) 831.

A total of 26,226 votes were cast in Clwyd West - a turnout of 46 per cent.

ANGLESEY

Rhun ap Iorwerth was re-elected as AM for Anglesey after a landslide result.

The Plaid Cymru candidate took 13,788 votes in Thursday's Assembly elections. Labour's Julia Dobson was second with 4,278.

Simon Wall of UKIP was third with 3,212, followed by Conservative Clay Theakston with 2,904. Gerry Wolff, of the Greens, took 389 votes, Tom Crofts of the Welsh Lib Dems took 334 votes and independent Daniel ap Eifion Jones took 262.

Rhun ap Iorwerth first took the seat in 2013 when former Plaid Cymru leader Ieuan Wyn Jones resigned and left politics.

ARFON

Plaid Cymru's Sian Gwenllian has been elected as the new AM for Arfon.

The newcomer took 10,962 votes to hold the seat for the Party of Wales by a majority of about 4,000.

The Gwynedd county councillor for Felinheli was put forward as the party's candidate for the 2016 election after previous Plaid Cymru AM for Arfon Alun Ffred Jones stepped down.

Her victory was declared at the count in Arfon leisure centre at about 3.40am on Friday.

Labour's Sion Jones came second with 6,800 votes. Martin Peet for the Conservatives was third with 1,655 and Lib Dem candidate Sara Williams took 577 votes.

CLWYD SOUTH

The result in Clwyd South was another Labour hold in the north east of Wales, with Ken Skates retaining his seat after collecting 7,826 votes.

Simon Baines of the Conservative Party was second with 4,846, while Mabon Ap Gwynfor of Plaid Cymru took third with 3,861.

NORTH WALES REGIONAL AMs

So far four candidates have been elected for the North Wales region:

Michelle Brown (UKIP Wales), Nathan Gill (UKIP Wales), Llyr Gruffydd (Plaid Cymru),  Mark Isherwood (Welsh Conservative Party).
