A volunteer swim coach says she was “chuffed to bits” to be nominated for a prestigious award, but says she is just doing her bit to help.

Delyth Jones, a coach for Denbigh Dragons Swim Club, was nominated for the volunteer of the year category at the Wales Sport Awards, organised by BBC Cymru Wales and Sport Wales.

Delyth, known as Del, attended the prestigious ceremony alongside Welsh sportsmen and women like Jade Jones, Darren Campbell, Christian Malcolm and Nathan Blake.

Del said: “The awards night was brilliant - I was a bit nervous to begin with being part of the Sports Wales Awards and being around the sports personalities and celebs, but once the show started I did relax.

“At the beginning a couple of other finalist and I did a short interview for the BBC to talk about the volunteer work we do.

“I thoroughly enjoyed it and was chuffed to bits being part of the whole process as I'm just someone from Denbigh who enjoys doing her bit to help run a swim club.”

Del is the team manager, competition secretary and judge one official for the Denbigh Dragons . She is also the team manager and competitions secretary for the Denbighshire Development Team (DDT), which includes clubs from Rhyl, Ruthin, Corwen and Denbigh.

She also won the Denbighshire volunteer of the year and sports ambassador awards this year.

She continued: “It all started when my children began swimming lessons and progressed into the club, I started helping out and one thing led to another.

“A number of years later, I’m still there.

“Last year I was one of the main organisers in the DDT inaugural meet - as DDT is self funded we needed to raise funds to cover fees for the 25m and 50m training sessions. Last April we held our own meet in Llandudno with not only the North Wales club but also clubs from over the border wanting to take part.

“To win the Denbighshire volunteer of the year and sports ambassador was a shock but when I heard I'd been shortlisted and a finalist in the Sports Wales Awards I was flabbergasted and overwhelmed.

“It’s a great pleasure being part of the swimming world. It has been and continues to be a joy working with all past and present members of Denbigh Dragons SC, DDT and North Wales swimming.”
