AN INDIAN restaurant in Ruthin has been handed a new one-out-of-five food hygiene rating.

Himalaya, at 32a - 34a Well Street, was given the score after assessment on May 22, the Food Standards Agency's website shows.

The inspection report rated the cleanliness and condition of its facilities and building ‘generally satisfactory’, its hygienic food handling ‘improvement necessary’, and its management of food safety ‘major improvement necessary’.

The restaurant’s rating may come as a shock to residents, with the business enjoying an otherwise good reputation in the town.

It means that of Denbighshire's 259 restaurants, cafes and canteens with ratings, 174 (67 per cent) have ratings of five and just two have zero ratings.

Himalaya was approached for comment.
