A MOTHER of three was left to pocket the difference after a supermarket giant overcharged her more than £7,000... for a £70 grocery shop.
Jane Suner, who lives in Llanuwchllyn, was ‘stunned’ after finding she had been charged £7,162, instead of the £71.62 she had spent on groceries.
Mrs Suner, who lives with her three children, who are all under the age of 11, shopped on-line with Asda the week before Christmas.
After returning to Bala from a family visit to Liverpool, Mrs Suner realised that the supermarket chain had taken £7,162 from her account, £7,090 more than they should have.
“I went to the bank to pay my mortgage on December 28, and I couldn’t believe what I saw,” said Mrs Suner.
“£7,162 was taken out on Christmas Eve.
“I have an overdraft of £500 - which I was already in, so I don’t understand how the bank would let them take money out that wasn’t even there in the first place.”
After reporting the incident to Asda, the money was paid back into Mrs Suner’s account - but not until two weeks later, leaving Mrs Suner and her family with no money during the Christmas period.
“I have had no money since this has happened, as it took Asda 14 days to put the money back in my account,” said Mrs Suner.
“My family have had to buy me nappies for the kids as I’ve had no money to buy anything.
“Since the money has gone out I have received letters from NatWest, telling me to put the money back in my account or they are going to take it further.”
To add insult to injury, Mrs Suner was then charged £50 by NatWest for going overdrawn.
“The bank have informed me to take a statement to Asda as proof of the charges and told me to sort it out with them.
“But why should I, none of this is my fault.”
This week a spokeswoman for the supermarket chain said: “Asda will be paying the charges for Mrs Suner.”
A spokesman for NatWest said: “As a result of a keying error by Asda an incorrect amount was presented for payment taking the account in excess of the agreed overdraft limit.
“The position has now been rectified and we understand that Asda have agreed to refund Mrs Suner with any charges and interest that has been incurred.”
