TALENTED racquet enthusiasts have enjoyed some fantastic success.
NEWRBA’s U-16 team won a great victory in the Welsh inter-county championships in Llanelli.
The 10-strong team included Denbigh’s Matthew Vacher and Eli Clough of Llanferres.
Team manager Mike Cain had to juggle the partnerships depending on the opposition strength and the competition was played on a group basis, with the teams playing each other.
NEWRBA won their first match against Gwent 6-3, and this result was followed by fine 7-2 successes versus Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.
The final shoot-out was against South Glamorgan, the other undefeated team remaining in the competition.
It was a thriller with the result decided by the last event.
Matthew Vacher lost the boys’ singles 21-16 after giving away three years to his opponent R Hemmadi.
After South Glamorgan went 4-2 up, Eli Clough played her part in the comeback, joining Callum Colquhoun to win their mixed doubles clash 21-10.
It all came down to another mixed doubles match, which fluctuated either way with both pairs getting a slight lead only to be overtaken.
The rallies were skilful, hard and exhausting and in the end Dan Ellis and Ellen Liddle kept their nerve to defeat Evans and J Mahenthiralingham 21-19.
That meant NEWRBA secured a stunning 5-4 victory.
