RUSTY Corwen ended their six-week break without a game with a defeat at home to Wrexham Area League Premier Division high-flyers Castell Alun.
Leon Bowen gave Castell Alun the lead, but Corwen levelled when Dave Cunnah’s cross was met by captain Iwan Jones with a diving header.
In the second half Bowen added his second as Corwen failed to clear their lines from a corner.
The home side went close but the Castell Alun goalkeeper made a good save from a close range Andrew Roberts shot, while Dewi Edwards hit the post.
In the closing stages Bowen completed his hat-trick to seal victory.
An up-and-down week for Bala Town Reserves saw them progress in one competition and depart another.
The men from Maes Tegid finally played their long-awaited North East Wales FA Challenge Cup tie with Penyffordd and it was a positive outcome for Bala as they won 7-3.
However, the news wasn’t as good in the Horace Wynne Cup as Bala suffered a 4-3 loss at the hands of Lex XI Reserves.
After a five-week break due to the Christmas holidays and the bad weather, Llanuwchllyn made a triumphant return to action in the Horace Wynne Cup, beating Rhos Aelwyd Reserves 1-0.
Despite having winger Robin Llyr sent off after 20 minutes, Llan did well to keep the tie goalless.
With 20 minutes remaining came another turning-point as a Rhos midfielder was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge. With the player numbers equal again, Llan saw the opportunity to take the game to their opponents.
Hedd Dafydd’s corner reached Llan centre-half Ifan Jones and he headed firmly into the back of the net.
