WITH regard to the letter by M Roberts - 'Wood pigeons are vermin' in last week’s Free Press, may I address some of his less than intelligent remarks?
He claims I know nothing about so called 'country matters' - and feels that utilising decoys to lure pigeons is fair practise.
The point I made is that these birds were being shot on a Sunday - a day of peace and rest, and in atrocious conditions when there was thick snow on the ground.
So how could these unfortunate creatures be "destroying a farmers vegetable crop" when they couldn't even reach it through the snow?
For your information Mr Roberts, my husband was a shooter - and for many years a member of the Wildfowlers Association.
Their code of practise recommended NOT shooting wildlife during extreme conditions of bad weather, when birds were obviously struggling to feed and survive.
However, you obviously think it is fair to blast any creature you see fit - regardless of season - by classing them as 'vermin'.
I think the recent spell of severe weather has done more damage to farmers crops, than any flock of pigeons.
