CASH has been flowing in since the Leader highlighted an appeal to provide a St David’s Day meal for the homeless.

Cllr Paul Pemberton, who represents Ponciau on the county council, is planning to lay on a tasty hot treat for up to 60 people at an open-air kitchen in Wrexham’s Market Street car park from 6pm-7.30pm on Friday.

But last week he said his requests for food or cash donations had gone unheeded by the area’s big supermarkets.

And he put out an urgent appeal for other businesses and individuals to help.

He says that soon after the story appeared in the Leader, he was contacted by an elderly resident of the Plas y Delph care home in Rhos who wanted to hand over £10.

Then Katherine Allot, manager of the Erw Gerrig sheltered accommodation in Rhos rang to tell him residents there had organised a collection and wanted to donate £42 towards his appeal.

A donation of £30 in cash came in from the Vehicle Solutions company in Buckley.

Cllr Pemberton said: “I want to give homeless people in the area a decent hot meal.

“They have had a hard winter and I think they deserve a treat.

“We’ll have an outdoor cooker and a generator and the idea is to give everyone who turns up a hot meal and a cake baked by a lady from Rhos Community Council, whose members will be helping me on the night.

“We’ll be giving everyone a daffodil to mark St David’s Day and a goody bag with toothpaste, a toothbrush and soap.”

He added: “I am grateful to everyone who has responded to my appeal and I think it is absolutely superb that quite a bit of the money has come from people who can hardly afford it themselves.”

If you can help Cllr Pemberton’s appeal you can call him on 07860 937582.

The refusal by the supermarkets to donate anything is disgraceful. The managers need to be named and shamed, i wonder had the leader contacted them initially would they refuse, of course they wouldn't, they are just scum who only do anything for publicity. People need to start shopping at the co-op, ethically sourced food and better support for british farmers.

It's not a meal they need, but a roof over their heads!

Have you seen the stuff Marks& Spencer gthrow out at the end of the day? All supermarkets do the same. I spent a lot of time in NY a few years ago and visited some soup kitchens on Far Rockway - all food was donated from local supermarkets and stores. Why can't we do that here?

The site of Pemberton heralding charity should result in one of the biggest belly larfs Rhos has ever seen.
