A VILLAGE calendar has raised over £10,000 for a cancer unit.

Beauty and the Beast 2009, was Britain's first unisex double sided calendar, posed by 24 villagers from Clawddnewydd.

The calendar was officially launched in October 2008, and since then has raised £10,014.

The calendar is the brainchild of a small group of ladies from Clawddnewydd.

Headed by Sharon Jones, the group took the initiative after seeing the 2008 Cheeky Chappies charity calendar shot by photographers Jayne and Chris Birchall.

“We thought what a wonderful; way to raise money for cancer charities,” said Sharon.

“Money was raised from February 2008, then when the idea of the calender came up, people were named or volunteered to take part.

“The last calendar sold online on January 4, 2010,” she added.

The calendar was sold throughout Denbighshire, and through their website
In the region of 850 calendars were sold in shops across Denbighshire and on their website from October 24 to January 4.

Funds were also raised from bingo nights, fun nights, the launch and end party of the calendar, a movie night, auction of promises and raffles.

The group presented the money raised to Iona Davies, who represents Glan Clwyd Hospital, Breast and Testicular Cancer units.

Thanks to the £10,014 raised, the cancer unit has benefited from a new bed and a new reclining chair.

“The community support and effort has been phenomenal,” said Sharon.

“There are many people I would like to thank, firstly the 24 brave people in the calendar.

“Chris and Jayne Birchall who did all photography free of charge plus the art work for the calendar.

“Fineline who did the printing at cost for us and the charity.

“The Glan Llyn and Canolfan Cae Cymro, Clawdd for the use of the facilities during the fund raising events.

“The community that have supported each event and shops and businesses that sold the calendar.

“The Companies that sponsored each page to make the calendar printing costs a lot less

“And the media, including the Free Press,” she added.

The fund raisers are now concentrating on 2010, and will be carrying out local support work, focusing on the school, chapel, village hall and shops.
