Corwen Pavilion

CORWEN Pavilion has closed with immediate effect due to significant health and safety concerns.

As part of preliminary investigations for minor refurbishment works which were due to be carried out, surveyors found substantial electrical faults throughout the building, including water ingress resulting in significant risk to life.

Other surveys carried out by Fire and Rescue Service officers also found numerous fire safety problems along with limited fire detection and safe evacuation for members of the public.

Further potential health risks were found, including the risk of cross contamination due to a lack of appropriate welfare facilities.

Denbighshire County Council leader, Hugh Evans, said: “This really is devastating news, not only for the people of Corwen but for Denbighshire as well.

“Unfortunately we have been left with no option but to take this drastic course of action.

“As the building has aged, problems have increased to the point where there is little to be gained from continuing to use a ‘sticking plaster’ approach and we now need to find a better solution for the people of Corwen.”

Denbighshire’s head of Leisure and Youth Services, Jamie Groves, added: “This is a real setback and is very disappointing news.

“We had raised a substantial amount of funding, which was to be invested in the building, but the results from the investigations mean that the building is not safe and is no longer fit for purpose
