FORMER Royal butler Paul Burrell has swapped his luxury home in America for his flower shop in Farndon.

In an exclusive interview with the Leader, the 52-year-old says that he missed Britain and the “beer and fish and chips” and will be focusing on running his shop for at least six months this year.

Mr Burrell, who has a home in Orlando, will live in a flat above the shop.

He told the Leader he would jump at the chance to return to reality TV show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!.

But he says he is happy with the reaction from locals who have been surprised to see his face back in the area.

“There has been nothing negative at all,” said Mr Burrell, who spent much of last year travelling around the world.

“I’m a realist and I know that not everybody likes everybody but I only seem to get positive reactions on the streets.

“When I walk down the high street in Wrexham everybody waves and says hello. They are very friendly.

“The people are much more friendly in Wrexham, the people in Chester do not speak so much.”

He added: “People do not believe all they read in newspapers – the people in Wales are not stupid.”

Mr Burrell, who only spent a month in the UK last year, has featured heavily in the media since the death of Princess Diana in 1997, to whom he was the butler.

In 2002 he was acquitted of stealing from the Princess’s estate and, in 2008, gave evidence at the inquest into her death.

He had joined the household of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1987 and served as Princess Diana’s butler until her death.

Speaking about the publicity, the Wrexham FC supporter said: “I just think I am more known now than ever before.

“It is very strange for me. People know me and I think ‘why haven’t you forgotten me yet?’

“Perhaps because I’m always attached to an icon of our times.

“I can’t forget what happened – I spent a lot of time with a very special family and there is a lot of nostalgia there.

“I’m an ordinary man and I have just been thrown into extraordinary circumstances.

“I came from a very simple beginning and I went right to the top – I don’t know anywhere grander than Buckingham Palace.”

Mr Burrell says he doesn’t have any clear plans for the future but wants to “live life now, because tomorrow could be gone”.

His wife Maria, who is from Holt, is based between the Farndon and Orlando homes and Mr Burrell says they keep their relationship “behind closed doors”.

His two sons Alex, 26, and Nick, 23, live in Orlando.

Reflecting on his time on the hit ITV show I’m A Celebrity...Mr Burrell, famed for his reactions during the bushtucker trials, said he would “not recommend” eating kangaroo’s testicles as he was forced to do.

“I would love to go back in the jungle,” he said, “When I saw Jordan go back in I thought I could too. My favourite bit was surviving because I didn’t think I would.”

He came runner up on the show, with the £250,000 prize money going to local charity Nightingale House Hospice.

Mr Burrell added that he would also love to appear on Strictly Come Dancing despite having “two left feet”.

The former butler has also turned his hand to painting watercolours and says he loves to visit places like Erddig and Chirk to get inspiration.

He recently sold 30 paintings at his shop and wants to continue with his new passion.

No need for Max Clifford... then !!

Ask me who gives a flying toss what he does, except for him of course!

The sooner he reacquaints himself with his former employer, the better.

I'm not sure what he has done wrong to be honest. He cashed in on his fame while he could after being treated badly by the Royals. He was savaged by the media and that turned lots against him. He's not exactly a murderer, drug dealer of menace to society.

karen - "I'm not sure what he has done wrong to be honest.... He's not exactly a ...menace to society." Only insofar as he's symptomatic of our facile society's infatuation with "celebrity culture". I'd have no problem commending him for being an excellent butler, but I resent the fact that he's in our papers and magazines and on our television screens simply because of who his dead employer was.

See your point, Roland but that is sadly what society is like these days. Look at WAGS they become celebs so do people with a kiss and tell story. Is he to blame though for wanting to make some money for himself and his family?

  11. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 13:54 on 12 March 2010 Report

karen - "...Is he to blame though for wanting to make some money for himself and his family?" No, but if he chooses to put his head above the parapet, then he has to take the flack.

Good for you Karen, stand up for yourself. The people on these pages have to hate and pour bile all over people they have never met, who can't or won't defend themselves. Their lives would be empty without it. It's them we should feel sorry for.

  13. Posted by: tommy at 12:38 on 13 March 2010 Report

robincooperscat dont you think you have got that the wrong way round, its because your own life is an empty void that you crave after the endless drivelings of what is laughingly referred to as "celebrity".Burrell and the scroungers he originally served(the monarchy) are right up there with the rest of the chancers(celebs) who not only find themselves on a totally unearned gravy train, but to their perpetual amusement find the public take them seriously .

robincooperscat and karen: spot on.... Welcome home Paul.

  15. Posted by: a cahill at 20:40 on 13 March 2010 Report

robincooperscat.... Why would a man who has gone to the top give an interview to the Leader... I think its testing the water to see how people react... he seems to be locked into the past or is just using it as a way to make more money..... during the postings about dead babies Karen advised that it was time let go and move on maybe that what he needs to hear and let Diana rest in peace

  16. Posted by: greenflyer at 00:28 on 14 March 2010 Report

the mans hardly a murderer so leave him alone you muppets ,even if im not a fan of his

  17. Posted by: karen at 14:30 on 14 March 2010 Report

Imagine if any of us were in the situation where we had the chance to make a few million pounds by playing the media game - who seriously would turn it down? If your son or daughter became famous celebs earning millions would you honestly be critical of them? Its easy to criticise someone for having what you dont have - when you have it your opinions might change.

  18. Posted by: a cahill at 23:40 on 14 March 2010 Report

Karen would you be willing to put yourself and your family in the limelight for a quick buck...... I wouldn't.... the media gave him a roasting over the alleged theft yet he still wants the double edged sword that it can bring.. my family are more important to me than any publicity or the money it can bring or the obvious hurt to them when the tide turns against me as it more than likely would given the stste of the tabloid newspaper industry

  19. Posted by: karen at 12:06 on 15 March 2010 Report

The media gave him the roasting over the alleged theft before he had even gone public. He went public after that and I can't blame him. For a live changing amount of money that would provide for my family I would put myself in the limelight - and... that is depite the fact that myself and husband were hounded by the press 3-4yrs ago over malicious allegations. If I could make money from a story to fund myself in uni I would do so.

  20. Posted by: GBoycott at 13:19 on 15 March 2010 Report

I completely understand karen's point of view. It's all too easy for us to sit here on our moral high-horse and say we wouldn't do this and wouldn't do that, model citizen etc... when if the money was offered to us i bet some if not many would do the same thing, we simply don't know. If we were all as saintly as some holier than thou posters on here we would live in some sort of utopia.

  21. Posted by: a cahill at 13:21 on 15 March 2010 Report

Karen.... I suppose it is a case of different values and ethics... I don't belive that a person should be toasted because of his/her association with the rich or famous... there are lots of people who spent years training or working yet don't get the chances that some of these people get simply because they were part of the lives of others

  22. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 16:15 on 15 March 2010 Report

I don't blame him for taking the opportunity to make money out of his association with his dead employer; what I begrudge is a society which is so itellectually wanting that he has the opportunity to do so.

  23. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 16:26 on 15 March 2010 Report

robincooperscat - "The people on these pages....lives would be empty without it. It's them we should feel sorry for" Ah, and this is where you miss the point completely. I DO have a life of my own, which is why I resent the pitiful people who feel the need to live theirs vicariously through the likes of some dead woman's butler. (cont. Heat/Now/OK/Hello etc)

this blokes no different to the rest of the bog brains.the masses are drip fed this empty headed shite till it is coming out of their feckin earoles.the inability tothink or ask questions is now the prerequisite to being a member of modern britain.
