Police appeal over Wrexham driver's A55 ordeal

CHESHIRE Police are appealing for witnesses after a Wrexham man was subjected to a terrifying example of dangerous driving.

The incident happened at about 8am on Wednesday (May 26) on the A55 Chester/Ellesmere Port-bound carriageway, between its junctions with the A483, known locally as the Post House roundabout, and the A41, known as Sainsbury's roundabout.

A red Volkswagen Golf, driven by a 45-year-old man from Bwlchgwyn, was overtaking a lorry when a white van drove up behind.

The van's male driver flashed his lights at the Golf, and drove very close behind him while he was in the process of overtaking.  The van then overtook the Golf as it continued to move past the wagon.

To do this the van drove on to the central reservation area but collided with the side of the Golf and attempted to push past him, potentially forcing him against the lorry.

The van completed the manoeuvre and then drove off at speed.

As a result of the incident the Golf suffered scratching and denting along the length of the driver’s side.  The driver was uninjured.

Police say it is highly likely the van will be marked with red paint from the Golf and may have suffered other damage.

Highways officers are appealing for witnesses and are also keen to trace the wagon driver the Golf overtook.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “The A55 Chester/Ellesmere Port carriageway is a key route for people travelling from North Wales, so it is possible that the lorry driver may have travelled from one of the haulage centres or businesses in the North Wales area.”

Information can be passed to the officer handling the case, PC Tony Carmon, on 0845 458 0000.

Anyone who traverses N Wales roads on a daily basis will see lesser examples of this many times. Tailgaiting is wholesale. The driving public are left to their own devices due to misguided road traffic policies by N Wales Police and it shows. - 700 speeding cars everyday in Penyffordd. NWP and Penyffordd Community Council do NOT care.

Its true what you say about tailgating.....but the police and courts dont seem too bothered about it... thats why its rife on our roads... as for white van man...its time the police did something realistic with cameras instead of useing them to gain funds... how about getting nutter van drivers and tailgatters off the roads for good... do away with the fines ban them for life.

Well said Yachdda. NWP need to take action instead of pretend policing through the media

Perhaps jonesy 1984 if you, your family or friends get killed on the roads you might have a change of attitude. You personally definitely would. Over 700 vehicles exceeding 30 mph on Chester Rd everyday. Penyffordd Community Council sitting on their hands. NWP unaccountable as ever.

Penyffordd_district - what is the speed limit on Chester Road? And also can you give me some clarification on how you have obtained your figures with regards to the volume of traffic exceeding 30mph?
