A TROUBLED Ruthin nightclub has been closed by North Wales Police following a 'violent incident' as the club shut after a busy Saturday night.
V2 nightclub in Lon Parcwr had it's licence revoked by Denbighshire County Council on May 28 following an application by North Wales Police to review its licence after continuous anti social behaviour reports from nearby residents.
The club was allowed to trade for 21 days after its licence was revoked and V2 manager Claire Locke and owner Gareth Turner said they would appeal the councils decision.
But now following the incident on Sunday, June 13, the nightclub’s future looks uncertain.
A spokesman for North Wales Police said: "The V2 nightclub in Ruthin, which had its licence revoked at a licensing hearing on May 28, but was allowed to trade pending an appeal, has now been closed following a late night disturbance.
"North Wales Police applied for an Expedited Review of the Premises Licence under the Licensing Act 2003 after a violent incident on Sunday June 13 at 1.20am.
"Denbighshire County Council’s licensing sub-committee decision means the premises’ licence is suspended with immediate effect and that the club will now be closed until a review hearing at a date to be fixed."
Inspector Dewi Roberts said: "North Wales Police are investigating the incident at the V2 nightclub, Ruthin and I to appeal for any witnesses to contact us on 101 quoting incident number L105220 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
“We will not tolerate offences of alcohol related violence at licensed premises."
Police said the incident involved a large group of men causing disturbance inside and outside the club, no weapons were involved but an ambulance was called but not needed.
No arrests were made but witnesses are sought.
The club shuts at 1pm and has a half an hour drinking up time, the incident reportedly started when doormen grabbed a drink of a male club goer who was 'slow' to drink up.
A man who does not wish to be named said: "A fight broke out between the doormen and the man and his friends
"One of the doorstaff grabbed a drink off a punter and then his mates started getting funny.
"The doorstaff got surrounded by this guy’s friends and then a big fight started and the doorstaff got injured with one of them being hit in the face with a bottle."
Other doormen at the top of town said it was a busy Saturday night, one of the busiest its been for a while because there had been a sheep shearing competition nearby, but there was no trouble all night in Ruthin until around 1.10pm when a large group continued fighting in the Square after walking up from the clubs direction.
Doormen from other licensed premises said they had to break up the trouble and police arrived around 1.30pm when the incident was dying down.
A spokesman for V2 said: "A small isolated incident was dealt with by our door supervisors in a professional manner without any assistance by the North Wales Police. We feel that the decision to suspend the licence is inappropriate and clearly shows an inconsistency with both North Wales Police and Denbighshire County Council towards licensed premises.
"Incidents that occurred last Saturday were widespread throughout Ruthin and worsened when a Welsh annual event brought people in from surrounding villages and towns on the same night as the England game.
"We are appealing against the decision to revoke and suspend the licence and will deal with both matters in due course."
