A POLICE investigation has been launched after a 16 year-old girl was assaulted inside a Denbighshire church.
The incident happened in St Dyfnog's Church in Llanrhaeadr, near Denbigh, around 5pm last Friday, July 9.
An 18 year-old man helped North Wales Police with inquiries into the assault and was later released on bail.
Police stressed that he has no connection with the church.
The medieval parish church, is situated alongside the A525, between Ruthin and Denbigh.
The vicar, the Reverend J Michael Williams, also said he believed the arrested man had no link to St Dyfnog's.
Mr Williams released a statement saying: “I've made my bishop - the Bishop of St Asaph - aware of it, and we understand that an allegation of a serious incident may have taken place in our parish church.”
The incident occurred just before a musical evening with Glandomwy Group and Friends, a Quartet of recording players, a pianist, singer and speaker was scheduled to take place in the church.
Local business man Barry Evans, from Pentre Motors based in the village said: "I was staggered when I read the news.
"But I haven't heard anymore about it."
Krithea Roberts, from neighbouring Anvil Pottery said: "I don't know anything about it, as I wasn't here that day.
"But I do know that the police put out a statement to the press before telling anyone in the village what had happened, all people were told is that there had been a serious incident.
"But what I don't understand is if the person has been caught, then why are the police still releasing information, as it is just worrying people, and it is worrying," she added.
