TWO lady bowls players were hit by a bottle during a prestigious regional match.
The incident happened during the match between the Welsh and Lancashire teams at Lower Park, Denbigh.

During the game, the women, one from each team, were struck by a “large pop bottle” believed to have been thrown from the new skate park next to the bowling green.

The two women were upset but neither was injured by the plastic bottle.

“We have had a quite a few incidents from people using the skate park,” said a spokesman for Denbigh Bowling Club.

“During the Wales vs Lancashire game last week (Sunday, July 25), two ladies were sitting by the score cards and were hit by a large pop bottle, the bottle hit one lady then bounced off and hit another.

“The bottle had been thrown over the hedge, but no-one that was on the skate park would own up to it, so there is no proving who did it.”

Other problems said to have been encountered since the skate park opened in June include:
score cards being changed
mountain bike skid marks on the grass
food being thrown onto the green - attracting seagulls.

The spokesman added: “I understand that young people are playing in the park and skate park until about 1.30 or 2.30 in the morning.

“I hope that something can be done to make the bowling green more secure and safe, as it doesn’t seem right to charge for using the green for matches when (it is) in such a state of disrepair.

“We have now been asked to keep a log of all incidents, so they can be reported on.”

But county councillor Gwyneth Kensler said the blame could not be put on the new skate park, as there has always been an element of anti-social behaviour at Lower Park.

“I am aware of some of the complaints during a women’s bowls match.

"I went to the park to speak to the bowlers and I also spoke to the many young people themselves,” she said.

“The users of the skate park, the bikers, bladers and boarders are also unhappy at the behaviour of some of the girls and boys who are not participants but who congregate there. Blame cannot be put on the new skate park.”

She added: “Ramps and Rails are working closely with Denbighshire County Council and the police and we are all determined to put a stop to this anti-social behaviour; measures will be taken and the police will operate a zero tolerance policy.

“It is not fair on all users of all of our sports facilities and those who live nearby.”
