Cassidy too tricky for Quay men

DENBIGH TOWN 2
CONNAH’S QUAY TOWN 0

TWO penalties edged Denbigh Town to a pre-season win over Connah’s Quay Town.

It could and should have been a clearer margin of victory, but a clean sheet against a determined Quay outfit was a good return for a tough workout.

As early as the fourth minute Denbigh should have been ahead.

Livewire Craig Wilkinson slipped Darren Cassidy clear but the effort was blocked off as the front man hesitated.

Jon Slater had a header fizz over from a sublime Gatfield cross and next Mike Hind had a shot that was blocked off on the line.

The same man sent another effort inches wide.

On 25 minutes Denbigh inched in front, when the troublesome Cassidy was hacked down on the edge of the box and Huw Price converted.

Gatfield almost made it two moments later but his fierce strike scraped a post with the Quay keeper at prayer.

More Denbigh pressure resulted in a second spot kick 10 minutes into the second stanza.

Again it was Cassidy who felt the challenge and Price bagged his second.

Was it all over? Possibly, yet a post came to Ianto Davies’ rescue as the Quaymen sought a goal of their own.

The game began to peter out and more chances were created - and squandered - but John James’ gang will be happy enough with a good performance as the new season now looms large.
