HALKYN 171-9
RHEWL 147
(Halkyn won 20-6)
ONE decent middle order contribution would have made the world of difference for Rhewl in their home fixture with Halkyn.
Chasing 172 for a rare win, four batsmen looked well set when they got into the 20s, but none of them went on to compile a match-winning contribution as the Flintshire visitors edged home by 24 runs.
Halkyn skipper Mike Briscoe opted to have first use of the Ruthin School batting strip and while his side accumulated a decent tally, it was slow going.
The Flintshire side’s innings was halted on 171-9 after they had batted for a maximum 52 overs.
Opener Simon Penney and number five batsman Ben Roberts were the main contributors with 43 and 39 respectively.
Rhewl will have been pleased to have kept their opponents below the 200-mark, with frontline bowlers Duane Partelow (2-43), Les Brophy (2-51), Simon Williams (1-34) and Rob Eccles (2-37) all making their mark.
One major department of the Rhewl reply was the amount of sixes they struck.
The villagers cleared the rope on no fewer than six occasions, but without a significant individual contribution they came up short of securing only their second success of the summer.
Skipper Jon Eccles (22), Duane Partelow (27), Simon Williams (24) and Chris Shone (27) all looked to be in the groove.
However, the Halkyn bowlers did enough to repel the threat, most noticeably Graeme Settle, who bagged 3-14.
