THIS week Brenig hosted the Welsh trials, organised by the Welsh Salmon and Trout Angling Association, writes Paul Cawley.
This is the loch-style boat fishing event to determine who fishes in next year’s Welsh team at the internationals.
More than 100 anglers competed over two days, catching a total of 331 fish, an average of three fish per rod.
Top rod on the first day went to Russell Owen of Llanidloes with 19 fish for a total weight of 29lb 1oz, and in second place was Gareth Dixon of Maesnant with 15 fish for 24lb 6oz.
This was a good result for these two anglers who fished in difficult windy conditions.
On day two, Geoff Thomson of Llandysul was top rod with 13 fish for 19lb 13oz with Gareth Jones of Merthyr the runner-up with 10 fish for 17lb 6oz.
Congratulations to these fine anglers!
Most of the fish caught in the competition and during the week by non-competition anglers were caught in the bays along the west side of the lake.
Bank anglers have also fared well in these bays and also in tower bay and along the visitor centre shoreline.
Despite torrential rain and strong winds throughout most of the week, the weather has remained warm enough to encourage some fly hatch activity. In particular heather flies have been blown off the surrounding moorland and anglers have reported good sport on dry flies.
Other patterns worth trying include boobies, dabblers, minkeys and sedge patterns.
This week will see another stocking of 1,000 fish.
Bookings are still being taken for four-hour fly-fishing sessions with Trevor Jones on September 19.
