A FISHING project aimed at keeping teenagers from bad behaviour has had its first session.

Wales’ first Hooked on Fishing scheme cast off at two ponds on St David’s Park Ewloe with 23 youngsters taking part.

Hundreds of fish were caught, all of which were then released.

Alan Davies, youth development worker for Flintshire Neighbourhood Watch has been helping to organise the project.

He said: “The first session was amazing. We had youngsters from across Flintshire, some who had never fished before in their lives.

“Just seeing their faces was amazing. This is to save them from going down the wrong path. It has been proved that fishing is the best thing to turn a pupil faced with expulsion into a star pupil.

“It is a different environment for them. They have to be thinking all the time. It gives them the chance to do something they would not normally do.”

It is now hoped a competition with other groups in England can be set up.

Chris, aged 13, had his first taste of fishing through project. He said: “It feels good when you catch a fish, you think ‘I really did catch that’. You can then coach someone else to do it.”
