A GIFTED teenager who achieved the highest A level results at Ruthin School will not be able to take up a place to study at Cambridge University.

Saakar Byahut picked up five A* exam results last Thursday, just two years after being granted a full scholarship to leave his home country of Nepal and join Ruthin school.

The bright 18-year-old achieved his A star grades in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Further Maths, and Further Maths Additional.

Despite his intelligence Saakar said he never had any intention of applying to Cambridge or any other UK university because he knew he couldn't afford it.

Saakar said: "But my teachers and friends at Ruthin encouraged me to be positive and said something might come my way.

I did get an offer, but I found I couldn't take it due to financial issues."

Ruthin School Headmaster John Rowlands said studying at Cambridge can cost around £30,000 a term.

Saakar was able to access his amazing A level results online last week from Nepal (home of the Gurkhas), but it was a day tinged disappointment.

"I was disappointed,” he said

“But I'm just going to stay positive and apply throughout the world for next year, and hopefully, I can get in somewhere with a full scholarship.”

Mr Rowlands said staff at the school looked into various scholarship schemes and charities that could help Saakar go to Cambridge but they have not been successful.

Saakar originally won a 100 per cent scholarship to come to Ruthin School through the British Council.

"He was an outstanding candidate, his performance on the entrance paper was spot on,” added Mr Rowlands.

"He's a superb lad the nicest student you will ever meet, we will continue to do our best for him.”

Saakar lives in the city of Lalitpur with his father - a physics professor and his mother who works in a semi-government organisation.

"They earn enough to get us going here, but not enough to finance my education internationally," he said.

"I have also been exploring universities in other countries.

"It does get a bit depressing when you start to look at all the great courses they have to offer, but then you find out that they offer no full scholarships.

"I am optimistic about the US, hopefully I'll get into a good university next year, but I really wanted to study in the UK because the courses there attract me more.

Saakar said he will never forget Ruthin or Denbighshire.

"I will never forget the mountains walks in Snowdonia, or Moel Famau and biking through the forests,” he said.
