EXPERIENCED Caernarfon athlete Gareth Warburton will represent Wales in the 2010 Commonwealth Games after he was called up to the 22 strong athletics team.

Warburton, 27, took part in the Melbourne games five years ago and heads to Delhi to begin the event in just six weeks time.

The 800m runner, who works as a librarian, began his career in rugby and played for North Wales before switching to athletics and training with the Menai Track and Field club.

Through his ten year career, his highpoint so far was competing in the last games, as well as taking a relay silver in the European Indoor Championships 2005.

Gareth will be one of up to 8,000 competitors from 71 countries - including up to 200 Welsh athletes - taking part in 17 sports in the 2010 Games from October 3-14.

The tournament is the only multi-sport international event in which Wales competes as a country in its own right, and Welsh athletes hold 15 current Commonwealth Games records in 110 hurdles, 400 metres, cycling, shooting and weightlifting categories.

Wales won 19 medals at the Melbourne Games four years ago.
