Good bags at Brenig after warmer weather

THE fishing at Brenig this week has gone well with a high number of fish being caught, although the weather has not been the best with a mixed week of heavy sun early on with windy and rainy evenings to end the week, writes fish farm manager Jack Finney.

Despite this, the warmer weather over the past few weeks has brought some good dry fly sport with large hatches of heather fly and small brown sedges.

These have without a doubt been the week’s best flies, including small beetles and muddlers.

This week’s best bag goes to a Wrexham angler with six fish for 13lb 1oz and the biggest fish of the week again goes to a Wirral Game member weighing 4lb exactly.

Anglers’ flies of the week still include boobies, coral, orange stragglers, woofta, orange and viva boobies, invictas, sedges and heather flies.

Hotspots for the week include the Nantglyn bank and up Hafod Lom woods to the top of the quarry.

Upcoming events:
Saturday, September 18: Moonwatch. Explore the wonders of the solar system with an open telescope evening with local astronomy societies.

Sunday, September 19: Hiraethog Country Fair. A full programme of events, activities, walks and rides.

Sunday, September 19: Fly casting lessons with resident coach Trevor Jones. (For bookings, contact Dona Davies 01490 420463.).

Meanwhile, the last week of August at Brenig saw some difficult fishing conditions with strong winds at times and some heavy rain spells. Despite this, the fishing has not been affected with anglers coming off with some good bags of fish, keeping the rod average to four fish per angler.

Anglers at time have reported seeing lots of fish movement on the surface, but the fish being hard to catch due to the abundance of heather flies on the water and the fish being spoilt for choice.

Best bag of the week went to a Crosby angler with six fish for 13lb 12oz and the biggest fish off the week went to a Wirral Game member weighing 3lb 12oz. Both anglers caught their fish on bibio hoppers and daddy long legs.

Best flies of the week have been heather fly, invicta, muddlers, sedges, bibios, and boobies - woofta, orange, coral straggle and black and green.

Hotspots were tower bay, Hafod Lom woods, Nantglyn bank and between the visitor centre and the dam.
