Mark Webster

FORMER world champ Mark Webster wasn’t too far away from claiming his first ever PDC title over the weekend.

The Denbigh darts ace reached the last-eight of Saturday’s Players’ Championship contest in Crawley, but he was only a leg away from knocking out Jackpot Adrian Lewis, who won the event.

Lewis won 6-5 in the quarter-final and went on to beat Steve Farmer 6-4 in the final.

Seeded 27, Webster opened his campaign with a 6-4 defeat of Mark Jodrill, before he swept aside Joe Cullen 6-1.

That was followed by another 6-1 scoreline, this time against Steve Evans, while the latest battle of the Marks versus Mark Walsh went Webster’s way in the fourth round by a 6-3 margin.

There was a further Players’ Championship contest on Sunday, with Webster’s run being ended by Northern Ireland’s Brendan Dolan after the Denbigh star saw off Peter Manley (6-2), Nick Fullwell (6-2) and Nigel Heydon (6-4).

In the final Colin ‘Jaws’ Lloyd, defeated Simon Whitlock 6-4.
