Neville Dickens: "I have followed the law"

THE owner of the historic Mines Rescue Station in Wrexham – which was partly demolished just days after it received listed status – is adamant he has done nothing wrong.

Last month the Leader reported council officials, backed by police officers ,were called to stop bulldozing at the Maesgwyn Road site.

As a result the local authority is looking at the possibility of bringing legal action through the courts.

However businessman Neville Dickens, the site’s owner, says he has nothing to apologise for and was acting within his rights.

“I have had planning permission to knock the centre down to build eight apartments on the land.

“What I have done is totally justified. As far as I am concerned I have followed the law.”

But Brynyffynnon ward councillor Phil Wynn said people throughout the town had been outraged at the attempt to flatten the building after it had been listed by heritage organisation Cadw.

It had previously been used for generations in mining rescue operations.

Cllr Wynn said: “My understanding is demolition work took place days after the centre gained official listed status. I believe that even as we speak Wrexham Council is considering whether to bring a case to court.

“Residents in the area and throughout the community have been deeply angered by the attempt to demolish the property.

“It is still standing but I think it has been very badly damaged.”

A spokesman for Wrexham Council confirmed it is investigating the matter and looking into the possibility of going to law.

The demolition work came in two stages a few days apart during August. At the time Wrexham Council issued a statement which said: “The contractors who started the demolition work on Wednesday were advised they did not have the necessary demolition consent under the Building Act and in receiving this advice removed their demolition equipment from the site.

“It is therefore surprising and regrettable that they returned to demolish the building.”

The last paragraph sums it all up really. Blatant disregard to a preservation order served 48 hours earlier.

True neville you did follow the law .... right up to the point when it became a listed building

Not very joined-up-government between Wrexham's planners and CADW; although CADW are pretty amateurish. The grant of permission for demolition should have been deferred until CADW knew what they were doing.

In fairness to Nev it would seem that the council should be held partly responsible for this mistermeanour they are the ones who granted planning permission for the demolition and errection of eight new flats, they then did not place any importance on this building whatsoever.

MM - It's not for the Council to "place importance" on a building, that's CADW's job. Presumably they were as slow as normal.

I think somebody HAS broken the law - whether it is Mr Dickens or his contractor. Didn't they need to apply for demolition consent regardless of whether the building was listed? And when they were told they didn't have this and were ordered to stop, they just came back and carried on regardless.

I guess he must have forgotten fact that a Section 80 was not filed or a Section 81 received. Hence the work being stopped in the first place. So if you put aside the listed building status they knowing continued with the work. Lets hope he is made to rebuild this bit of history bit by bit.

Hit him where it hurts ,in his pocket, if people dont put business his way he will soon feel the impact , dont deal with anything this man is involved in.

The outraged people of Wrexham will eagerly watch any developments on this issue. If Mr Dickens even gets away with merely having to rebuild the site it will be viewed as ‘money talks’ and ‘the old school tie’ dictating to the Council. The statutory £20k fine won’t mean anything to the multi-millionaire looking to greedily add to his fortune either! How much he pays for advertising space in the Leader won’t do him any harm either…

"I have followed the law". Not when a preservation order has been issued 48-hours earlier! GREED!.

his disrespect for the law and the people of wrexham shows he cares not one iota, as it is a criminal offence he should be jailed.

Mr Dickens may feel that he has followed the law as far as he is concerned but what about as far as everybody else is concerned. As far as I am concerned he broke the law & I hope as far as the law of the land is concerned that they will also feel that he broke the law.

Dickens would have got away with this if there had not been a public outcry. To say he was not breaking the law is pure unadulterated hard faced lying, and a statement that could only be made by a person who has total disregard for the law and is secure in the knowledge that his mates in the Mason will help him out.

You get over yourself Scrapman. It's a good job that you are in a minority or else the country we live in would be all tin huts & flats.
