Ann Jones, AM for Vale of Clwyd, addressed the Fire and Rescue Conference 2008 to tell of her Legislative Competence Order (LCO) which aims to make the fitting of the systems compulsory.

This proposal has cross-party support in the Assembly and is currently awaiting Westminster scrutiny.

The Fire and Rescue Conference is an international event which brings together the world's foremost officers and experts in the field. Ms Jones told the conference of the progress being made in Wales in getting sprinklers into schools as well as the benefits of domestic sprinkler systems.

"I was delighted to tell the conference about what's going on in Wales," said Ms Jones.

"My proposal is the first backbench LCO and I hope to make it a historic one.

"By installing sprinkler systems in all Wales' new homes we can save lives for generations to come.

"Examples from the USA, Canada and other parts of the world have proved the difference sprinklers can make," she added.

"This type of legislation is often overlooked but it needn't be and I see this as devolution at its best.

"This common sense public safety proposal will, I hope, make others follow in Wales' footsteps.

"I am grateful to all the support I have had from the Welsh Fire & Rescue services and the FBU in promoting my LCO," she added.
