A PETROL tanker caused chaos on the A433 to Tetbury this morning when it overturned and flooded the road with fuel.
The accident happened in rush hour just before the turning to Coates and the Thames Head bridge.
The fire service and police attended the scene along with the Environment Agency due to the fuel on the road.
A police spokesman said: "Due to a considerable spillage and continued leaking of fuel from the vehicle, the road has been closed to minimise any risk to the public.
The Environment Agency is also currently assessing the immediate vicinity to gauge possible damage to the local environment."
The road has been closed from the A429 Kemble turn to the Tarlton crossroads.
It is likely to reopen later this afternoon, but controlled by traffic lights, which will remain in place throughout the night and possibly through to the morning.
