A COMIC art festival will be taking Llangollen residents to new heights this Saturday.

The ashes of former astronaut Conrad Carpenter (a fictional comic book character created by American artist Steve Brower) will be released by hot air balloon 100,000 feet into the atmosphere above the town this weekend.

The stunt is part of an all-new festival called The Comic Book. Inspired by the wacky world of comic art, organisers are promising a feast of comedy, film, music and dance at the Royal International Pavilion.

The event is the brainchild of Dominic Chennell and Mel Brimfield, who recently co-edited a newly published book of comic art called Our Comic Book.

"The idea for the festival grew from the book and we think this will be the first event of its kind in Wales," said Dominic.

"It's not a comic book fair, but a festival of comedy, literature, music, dance and film inspired by the style of art that's developed out of comic books."

The one-day festival is being staged by Real Institute, an organisation that promotes contemporary arts events in North Wales, in partnership with the Royal International Pavilion, the Arts Council of Wales and various funders.

Highlights include comedian John Hegley, contemporary dance artist Marc Rees, American film artist Brian Dewan, comedy double act Kevin Reid and Jason Nelson, poet and comedian Suzanne Andrade and music from John Lawrence of Gorky's Zygotic Mynski.

As well as the main events, there will be various workshops, hot food, refreshments and plenty of parking on site. Doors open at 10.30am and the event finishes at 5pm.

Tickets cost £5 for adults and £3 for children, and can be bought on the door or in advance by calling the Royal International Pavilion on 01978 860111.
