LLANGOLLEN sports club has had a major boost to its fundraising efforts for a much-needed refurbishment of the town's sports pavilion.

The club has been granted an extra £63,000 from the Welsh Assembly via the Community Facilities and Activities Programme and is hopeful that work can begin very soon.

The club is trying to raise a total of £165,000 to extend the existing pavilion, increase the number of changing rooms to four and to bring the facilities up to date.

Work can begin once they have received a further £15,000 from Denbighshire County Council's commuted sum payments.

Phil Jones, chairman of the sports club, said: "This is really good news and we are really pleased.

"The Assembly have now awarded us a total of £113,000 over two financial years.

"The £63,000 doesn't come in until April 2009 but we will have enough money to start the project.

"We have had an email from Denbighshire Council supporting us in principle, but we are just waiting for final confirmation."

The project aims to increase the number of changing rooms at the pavilion from two to six and to refurbish the kitchen area.

The pavilion will be available for the use of the whole community and will be compliant with disability regulations.

According to Phil, work could start in less than a month and there are plenty of people willing to help out with the project. Phil himself was the chief property officer for Wrexham Council before his retirement and will manage the project.

He said: "We are hoping to start after Eisteddfod week, towards the end of July. We have a number of professionals involved with the club who will volunteer and there are a number of skilled tradesmen within the ranks of the various teams who are willing to give up their time."

The club would welcome any more volunteers who would be willing to help on the building work once the funds have been raised.

Anyone interested should contact Phil on 01978 861225.
