Parliamentary candidate for Clwyd West, Llyr Huws Gruffydd and Ruthin county councillor Morfudd Jones, will submit the call as part of a Welsh Assembly Government consultation on new guidance for setting local speed limits on Welsh roads.

Mr Gruffydd said: "Road accidents account for nearly half of all accidental injury fatalities in children. The vast majority of these accidents happen in residential areas and outside schools.

"Introducing more 20mph zones in residential areas and 10mph zones outside schools during school hours would save hundreds of Welsh children every year from death and injury."

Morfudd Jones, added: "As a local councillor I am regularly approached by residents concerned about road safety issues.

"I strongly support these calls because as the council's lead member for children and young people, this will greatly reduce the risk of road accidents involving children."

Llyr Huws Gruffydd added: "Figures also show that a high proportion of road accidents occur on rural roads, and I am keen that this issue, along with the safety of children outside our schools, will be debated in this consultation.

"We must be committed to continually promoting road safety and to reducing the number of road collisions and casualties, and this consultation marks an important step in this ongoing process.

"Anyone can contribute to the consultation until it closes on August 29.

"I urge people to make their voices heard so that as many opinions as possible can be taken into consideration."

*Three weeks ago St Asaph town councillors Bill Cowie and Dewi Owens joined with other councillors in calling for 20mph zones around the four schools in their town.
